For the first time ever, the basic democratic principles were fulfilled, and Greece developed the notions about citizenship and freedom. In “Magna Graecia” the autocracy was generally not recognized as a way of ruling the polis, although Sparta was a militarized city-state relying on oligarchy, and Corinth even employed tyranny. On the contrary – the most highly developed polis, Athens, was a purely democratic society. Nevertheless, a couple of reasons can expose the fact that even Athenian democracy was far from what we perceive when hearing this word nowadays...
