The English East India Company which was founded in 1600, had its third venture go to Surat, the major port of Gujarat in 1608. In 1616, King James sent an ambassador, Sir Thomas Roe and received permission from Jahangir to build a “factory” in Surat (Murphey 264). Other factories were set up in Calcutta, Madras, Bombay, etc. In 1757, Clive’s victory at Bengal allowed the Company to take responsible for that area.
