Sappho’s fragment 105a is a exemplary instance of the necessity to look deeper into the author’s intent in how he/she constructed a passage. First, a look at word choice is needed. Sappho 105a, as opposed to other selections of Sappho, involves five middle verbs. There is, perhaps, not a coincidence. “Oion to glukumalon EREUTHETAI akro ep’ usdo”. Sappho utilizes ‘ereuthetai’ (v. to become red), a middle passive verb, in lieu of ‘eruthron gignetai’ (to become red, adj. + verb).
