Throughout the poem you feel the utter exhaustion of the soldiers. The soldiers “marched asleep” (Owen 5) and were “Drunk with fatigue” (7) making them unable to truly appreciate their dire circumstances. They went into “An ecstasy of fumbling” (9) when the gas began to spray, “But someone was still yelling out and stumbling / And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime” (11, 12) and he was not quick enough with his gas mask.
The soldier begins to die a miserable death as his fellow soldiers watch through the haze of the gas “as under a green sea” (14). Owen’s use of sea and water imagery makes this scene very uncomfortable to witness...
