In turn, many Americans do not know how to pronounce names of other origins because they haven’t experienced the languages or accents before. Firoozeh, who is originally from Iran, uses many examples of times in her life when her name has negatively affected her. At one point she even changed her name to a more “Americanized” name, Julie. Once Firoozeh changed her name, life became much simpler; people were more willing to get to know her and were actually able to remember her name. When the Iranian Revolution occurred there were many prejudices about the people of Iran. Firoozeh never encountered these issues because she had a simple, American name and no accent - because of this she felt as though she was seeing the worst in people...
