They break all the rules and some of the boys are murdered. Things would have worked out differently if there had been an adult on the island. If an adult had been present, and survived the crash, they would have prevented the boys from loosing their sanity as well as their sense of control of themselves. The boys realized that there was no adult on the island and took advantage, swimming whenever they wanted, sleeping whenever they wanted, and doing whatever they wanted. An adult might have set up a schedule for the boys and some rules for them to follow. The boys would have had the proper authority and leader on the island...
