When he was exiled from his beloved city, he did it by choice, but the fact that he left in order for the plague to vanish shows his leadership qualities. The part in the play was very sad and heartbreaken because Oedipus leaves the city in which he ruled and saved from the sphinx. The Chorus in the play and people in Thebes are deeply sympathetic to Oedipus, and appreciative his willingness to go voluntarily into exile to save the city.
