On page 80, the author writes,

This is an example of foreshadowing. Taro’s father died fighting in a battle and Yoshitoki’s father went to his “grave unnoticed”. Later Yoshitoki does die in battle and he is not mentioned afterwards. Even though Taro gave up becoming a samurai at the end, he may later become a warrior in order to avenge the death of Lord Akiyama.
