Reading these two short summaries doesn’t really show the humanistic similarity, but if you read both stories carefully, you might catch it. In “The Allegory of the Cave” the prisoners were kept in a dark cave, where they were only able to see the walls of the cave. I think this cave was like a prison cell. Besides the chains keeping them there, I think the cave was also restricting them from going anywhere else. In A Bend in the Road, I think the town would represent the cave in “The Allegory of the cave”. New Bern, North Carolina was just like any old fashioned small town. “New Bern… was a small southern town, relatively isolated and largely uninterested in keeping up with the ever quickening pace of life elsewhere” [Sparks 16]...
