Assuming we use MSCI-US to represent the US equity market. the current index price is 1,369 and the index price 5 years ago is 1,007.. now, using the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) formula which is
CAGR = (P1/P0)^(1/y) -1
Where
P1= current price
P0= base price
y= number of years
CAGR= (1369/1007)^(1/5) - 1 = 6.33%
you can use the CAGR for a market rate of return based on a 5 years performance of MSCI-US... so, there it is, your market return...
Now, do me a favor, and don't copy paste my answer, and try doing the exact process using another index as your assumption such as S&P 500
