In nine short lines, Frost sums up the socio-economic situation of his time.
The rhyme link, between “fire” and "desire”, speaks to the rampant nationalism of the day. When Frost writes, “From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire.” the reader can surmise he believes the passions of power, conquest, and nationalism will prevail. These passions were, as throughout most of human history, the driving destructive forces before, during, and after World War I. Just as fire can destroy all it consumes, so too can passion.
