This I can guess held water due to its fairly shallow but u-shaped bottom which is visible from the remains. The moat that resides at middleham only has two sides, east and north. however from my visit and by analysing a local map, there was no other geographical protection such as a river, therefore there must have been a moat all the way round, this is not shown on the reconstruction...
